Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which areas will be cleaned during this project?

The project includes cleaning the waste from NATURAL AREAS (forests, fields, etc.). Cities are not included.

2. What does mapping mean?

The mapping process includes identifying the garbage piles, describing them and gathering their geographical coordinates via GPS in order to create a digital map of the garbage points. For more details on the mapping process please click here.

3. How can I sign up for helping with the mapping process?

Please fill in this form with your data and some information on the tools you have available for mapping. Once you finish signing up you are included in the database of mapping volunteers.

4. How can I sign up as a volunteer for the cleaning day?

We will soon post a form on this site, which you will have to fill in. You will then be included in the database with volunteers for cleaning the waste.

5. How will the waste be gathered and what happens to it afterwards?

Volunteers will first sort the garbage and then the waste bags will be transported to those base camps where the volunteers are allocated. Then the waste is taken over by waste management companies, which make the final sorting and direct it towards one of the following: recycling, co-incineration in order to obtain power or storing in sanitary landfills.

6. May I take part in the activities if I am not yet 18?

If you take part in an organized group (school, high-school) you will need an approval from your teacher or your parents. If you want to take part together with your friends a written approval from your parents is necessary.

7. Will authorities be notified in order to apply fines?

One of the aims of this project is for authorities to take a stand regarding the waste infrastructure in Romania: increase responsibility of local authorities which do not perform enough checks (on tourists and on companies) and do not apply legislation as often as needed such as to prevent garbage piles building up in touristic areas. We also consider it important that fines collected for illegal depositing of waste in the natural environment (forests, rivers, lakes, mountain tops, fields, etc.) should be directed towards the waste disposal infrastructure.

8. What are the financing sources for this project?

One of our basic rules refers to the way this project is to be financed: we accept indirect financing – services and products that are necessary for successfully completing this project.

9. Where can I find what is necessary for this project?

You can find it in the project guide, please click here.

10. I cannot upload my CV in the form requested by the organizers. Why?

There are restrictions of size – 50KB – and of type. If it is too large, please save it as text (.txt) and compress it in zip format; if it is still too large it means you either wrote too much (please make it shorter, nobody will read 10 pages) – or you included a photo (please delete it from your CV).

11. When will the cleaning day be?

It will be on the 25th of September 2010.
